Subaru said that although the mileage reading does not affect the safety of the vehicle, the survey is to understand whether the possible improper production will have an impact on the actual mileage reading, and also to know whether the exported vehicle has suffered any impact.
Before the investigation, in October, Subaru reported that the last inspection procedure for new cars sold to the Japanese domestic market over a period of more than 10 years was always responsible for employees who did not have qualifications. Subaru also vowed this week to increase supervision but did not mention anything related to the mileage reading survey.
On Wednesday, Subaru said that some inspectors disclosed to outside investigators that in the final inspection procedure, mileage data on some model cars was tampered with. Subaru added that there has been no confirmation of any act of shoddy.
Subaru's share price subsequently fell by 8.5% to its lowest level since July 2016. The company is also a major participant in the Tokyo stock exchange market.
The launch of Subaru’s investigation was also part of the Japanese series of production scandals in recent months. Nissan also admitted that there was misconduct in the final production process, and Kobe Steel, Mitsubishi Materials, and Toray also successively admitted that there was illegal production.
