The self-developed aluminum-based Rutherford superconducting cable passed the acceptance

[ Instrument R&D of Instrumentation Network ] On June 20, the Institute of High Energy Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences organized an aluminum-based Rutherford superconducting cable factory acceptance meeting in Jiangsu Wuxi Tongli Electric Co., Ltd. The meeting was conducted by combining on-site and video methods, and was chaired by Researcher Tang Jingyu, the project leader of the Experimental Muon Source (EMuS) of the High Energy Institute.
Wang Yifang, director of the High Energy Institute, attended the acceptance meeting and delivered a speech through the video. At the meeting, Hou Zhilong, head of the pre-research of EmuS superconducting magnets, introduced the background and technical requirements of the cable development work, and Zhao Yu, head of Tongli Electrical Technology, introduced the product development process and final test indicators, and said that various parameters reached the set goals.
The members of the acceptance team inspected the research and development of superconducting cable production lines and products, consulted the development report and test report and other documents, agreed to pass the factory acceptance, and believed that the product quality reached the international advanced level of similar products.
In order to develop the superconducting cable required for the superconducting magnets in the ring positive and negative electron collider and the superproton collider (CEPC-SPPC), the Institute of High Energy signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Wuxi Tongli Electric in 2015 to cooperate The technical breakthrough of the special cable. In 2018, the High Energy Institute and Tongli Electric signed a contract to develop an aluminum-based Rutherford superconducting cable for the EmuS project radiation-proof superconducting magnet prototype supported by the national major scientific instrument development project.
After several years of hard work and more than 100 process tests, in early 2020, Tongli Electric successfully completed the development of three aluminum-based Rutherford superconducting cables with a cross-sectional size of 4.7 mm × 15 mm and 1500 m. This product is made of Rutherford cable made of 16 strands of NbTi superconducting wire, which is covered with pure aluminum. It is the first domestic production.
The superconducting cable will be used for the pre-research prototype of the EmuS superconducting trapping solenoid, and it is also of great significance for advancing the pre-research work of the superconducting magnet of the CEPC detector.
The members of this acceptance expert group consisted of Guo Qiang, a professor-level senior engineer of Western Superconducting Company, Liu Yuanwen, a professor-level senior engineer of Dalian Jiaotong University, Tao Yuming, deputy manager of Hefei Joneng Electrophysics Company, and Zhu Zi'an, Yuan Ye, and Qingqing Xu of the Institute of High Energy.

Incoloy Material

Incoloy refers to a range of superalloys now produced by the Special Metals Corporation (SMC) group of companies and created with a trademark by the Inco company in 1952. Originally Inco protected these alloys by patent.[2] In 2000, the SMC published a 61-page document entitled "High-Performance Alloys for Resistance to Aqueous Corrosion" highlighting Incoloy, as well as Monel and Inconel products, and their use in fluid environments such as sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, hydrofluoric acid, phosphoric acid, nitric acid, other acids as well as freshwater environments.

Incoloy products are mostly chromium-based and mostly nickel-based, and designed for corrosion resistance as well as strength at high temperatures.

Incoloy alloys belong to the category of super austenitic stainless steels. One advantage is that Incoloy alloys do not have to be heat treated after welding to restore the corrosion resistance.
